EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing, is a powerful, new psychological therapy
which has been shown to be extremely effective in the treatment
of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and symptoms related
to Traumatic Experiences, such as nightmares, flashbacks,
intense anxiety and depression, intrusive thoughts, and
other emotional difficulties.
In
EMDR, the therapist helps the individual hold the traumatic
image in his/her mind and, while doing so, guides the individual
in executing a prescribed set of rapid, eye movements.
These rhythmic eye movements help to reprocess and remove
the negative, hurtful feelings which have been associated
with the traumatic memory. Thus, the memory no longer causes
the tremendous emotional pain it once did. |

The EMDR research continues to be very
encouraging, with numerous cases revealing improvement,
and positive articles published about it in the NY Times
and American Psychological Association Monitor. EMDR
is now used in an international humanitarian assistance
program to help provide this healing technique in cases
of disasters or other traumatic events. |
