Biofeedback is a technique
which is used to help reduce and control stress. Biofeedback
instruments detect and identify body cues which reflect
specific physical states of your body. These states are
not usually conscious and you are usually unaware of them.
By employing these instruments, you can learn to become
more aware of your body cues and alter them to bring them
under your voluntary control.
Biofeedback machines offer you instant data about such
physical states as your skin temperature, muscle tension,
and pulse rate. During biofeedback, you receive continuous
information about these states while you work with a therapist
to relax, control, and ultimately change these states.
You learn to read the tension in your body and change it
so that the feedback or information from the machine reflects
your new, changed physical state.
Biofeedback has been shown to provide symptom relief of
general stress as well as of the following disorders: tension
headache, migraine, hypertension, insomnia, spastic colon,
muscle spasms, anxiety, phobia, asthma, chronic pain, Raynaud's
syndrome, panic, GI disorders, TMJ, and other medical disorders.
Biofeedback is a very powerful treatment tool. However,
it is not a magical cure and requires the participant to
learn to relax and "let go." The therapist is
instrumental in identifying stress cues, guiding the client,
and training relaxation techniques. |
